Whilst the site doesn’t appear on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, both the second and third editions clearly mark it as the location of a church and its associated graveyard. Today, visitors to the area will find no physical trace of these structures; they were likely destroyed during the construction of the railway line in the late 19th century, as noted by historian Kinahan in 1885-86.

The disappearance of this religious site represents a common story across rural Ireland, where development and progress have often come at the cost of archaeological heritage. The marshy terrain near the river would have been a typical setting for early Christian settlements, which frequently chose locations near water sources for both practical and spiritual reasons. The fact that the site warranted inclusion on later Ordnance Survey maps suggests it held some local significance, even if its physical remains were already deteriorating by the time cartographers arrived to document the area.

This lost church and graveyard serve as a reminder of how much of Ireland’s medieval landscape has been erased or obscured by later development. The railway that likely sealed its fate would have been part of the Victorian expansion of Ireland’s transport network, bringing modernity to Donegal but inadvertently destroying centuries of local history in the process. Archaeological records like those compiled in the 1983 Survey of County Donegal are often the only remaining evidence of such sites, preserving their memory even when the stones themselves have long since disappeared.
