Hillfort, Brandonhill, Co. Kilkenny

Perched dramatically on the steep southwestern slopes of Brandon Hill in County Kilkenny, this ancient hillfort presents one of Ireland's more challenging archaeological sites to explore.

The D-shaped enclosure sprawls across nearly two hectares of precipitous terrain, with slopes reaching 45 degrees in places and even steeper sections where massive boulders punctuate the landscape. While clearly visible from aerial photography, the site proves remarkably difficult to distinguish at ground level, testament to both its age and the challenging topography it occupies.

The hillfort's substantial stone walls, constructed from large blocks measuring up to 30 centimetres across, follow the natural contours of the hillside with remarkable precision. The enclosing wall maintains a consistent width of about three metres throughout its circuit, though its height varies dramatically depending on whether you're viewing it from the interior or exterior side of the slope. The most intact section runs along the southwestern edge where the ground levels out slightly, creating the clearest evidence of the original construction. Within the eastern perimeter, two quarry-like depressions suggest either ancient stone extraction or perhaps defensive features, surrounded by the scattered remnants of what may have been additional fortifications.

The interior of the enclosure tells its own story of ancient occupation, with an uneven landscape of humps and hollows that speak to centuries of human activity and natural erosion. A small cairn sits within the northwestern quadrant, adding another layer to the site's archaeological significance. While a gap in the western wall might represent an original entrance, it could equally be a modern breach in the ancient defences. The hillfort's position, neither at the summit nor on a natural shoulder of the mountain, suggests its builders prioritised other factors beyond commanding views, perhaps choosing this location for its natural defensive advantages or proximity to resources now lost to time.
