This ancient hillfort sprawls across 11 hectares of heather-covered terrain, its earthen banks still visible after millennia, particularly along the northern and eastern edges where they've best survived the ravages of time. The site forms part of the remarkable Baltinglass hillfort cluster, a collection of nine such fortifications that once dominated this corner of the Wicklow Mountains during the Iron Age.

What makes Spinans Hill particularly fascinating is the collection of cairns nestled within its protective embrace. At the summit sits a substantial central cairn, surrounded by five smaller companions, which archaeologists believe may represent a Neolithic passage tomb cemetery; a sacred burial ground that predates the hillfort itself by perhaps two thousand years. Several of the smaller cairns show evidence of stone cists at their centres, suggesting they once housed megalithic tombs, though centuries of robbing and weathering have taken their toll on these ancient structures.

The hillfort's irregular shape follows the natural contours of the hill, creating a formidable defensive position that commanded sweeping views across the surrounding landscape. While aerial photography and GPS surveys have helped map its full extent, the thick covering of heather and scrub makes it challenging to spot smaller archaeological features that might reveal how people once lived within these ramparts. Despite extensive investigation, no clear evidence of ancient dwellings has been found, leaving questions about whether this was a permanent settlement, a seasonal gathering place, or perhaps primarily a ceremonial site centred around those enigmatic cairns.
