Holy well, Forrestfields, Co. Dublin

Somewhere beneath the built-up ground at Forrestfields, on what was once the outskirts of Swords village in County Dublin, a holy well has quietly ceased to exist above ground.

There is no stone surround, no votive offerings, no trickle of water catching the light. It has simply been built over, leaving no visible surface trace, which makes it an unusual case even among Ireland's many forgotten sacred springs.

Holy wells, typically natural springs or water sources associated with healing or devotion, were once a fixture of the Irish landscape, and this one carried a specific therapeutic reputation. Local tradition held that its waters could cure ailments of the eyes and the mouth. The name itself encodes this belief: according to O'Reilly writing in 1910 and corroborated by Ó Danachair in 1958, it derives from the Irish word 'sliop', meaning a lip or mouth. That etymology suggests the well's association with oral ailments may be very old indeed, predating any documentation and embedded instead in the place-name itself. The qualifier 'possible holy well' used in the record reflects a degree of scholarly caution, as the physical evidence no longer exists to confirm its nature beyond local memory and these two cited references.

There is, in practical terms, nothing to see at this location now. The site sits in a suburban stretch that has grown considerably around the old village of Swords, and no feature marks the spot. What makes it worth knowing about is less what it looks like and more what its absence represents: a layer of local memory and linguistic evidence surviving even when the physical site does not. For anyone with an interest in Irish place-name history or the geography of vernacular healing traditions, the Forrestfields well is a reminder that the record of a place can outlast the place itself.
