House – indeterminate date, Caheravoley, Co. Galway

Scattered across the undulating scrubland and rock outcrop of Caheravoley in County Galway, there is a fortified enclosure that raises more questions than it answers.

Its date is officially listed as indeterminate, and no builder's name is attached to it, yet the structure itself is far from anonymous. The rectangular bawn, a defended enclosure typically associated with plantation-era or late medieval settlement, stretches roughly 67 metres by 48 metres and still stands to a height of around 1.8 metres in places. It is built from undressed mortared stone, giving it a blunt, practical character rather than anything showy.

What makes Caheravoley particularly worth attention is the detail that survives within it. At the east and west angles of the bawn stand two opposing circular turrets, each around 2.5 metres in diameter. The eastern turret is the better preserved of the two and rises to two storeys, with five gun loops distributed across both floors; the western turret also retains five gun loops. Gun loops are narrow slits through which firearms or crossbows could be discharged, designed to allow defence from within while offering minimal exposure to attackers outside. Beside the eastern turret, a garderobe chute is still visible in the south-east wall; a garderobe was the standard medieval and early modern term for a latrine, its chute carrying waste through or down the wall face. The collapsed entrance, only about 1.1 metres wide, lies at the north-east. Within the bawn's interior, a rectangular house measuring roughly 12 metres by 6 metres sits centrally, and near the north corner, grassed-over foundation lines indicate former outbuildings. The whole complex is surrounded by the traces of an extensive field system, suggesting that whatever this place was, it supported an organised agricultural settlement as well as a defended household.
