House – indeterminate date, Lissadrone, Co. Mayo

At Lissadrone in County Mayo, a rectangular arrangement of stone walls sits within the northern half of a ringfort, the kind of circular earthwork enclosure that once served as a defended farmstead during the early medieval period in Ireland.

What makes this structure quietly curious is that nobody can say with any certainty what it is, or when it was built. It is recorded simply as a possible house, its date indeterminate, its purpose unconfirmed.

The remains measure roughly sixteen metres along their longer axis, running west-northwest to east-southeast, and about five metres across. The walls, where they survive, are around 1.2 metres wide and built in a technique that tells you something about the people who raised them: an outer facing of upright stones enclosing a rubble fill of smaller and medium-sized stones packed within. This kind of construction is practical and relatively common in the Irish vernacular building tradition, though the walls here have been partly robbed out over time, meaning later generations quietly dismantled sections to use the stone elsewhere. Several large boulders remain scattered across the interior, their original function, whether structural, domestic, or simply geological inconvenience, left open to interpretation. The relationship between this rectangular structure and the enclosing ringfort is itself unresolved. It may be broadly contemporary with the fort, or it could represent a later reuse of a ready-made enclosure, a not uncommon pattern in the Irish landscape where earlier monuments were repurposed across the centuries.
