House – indeterminate date, Moneyteige, Co. Wicklow

On a hillside at Moneyteige in County Wicklow, a low ridge of earth traces the outline of a house that no one can confidently date.

The remains are modest to the point of near-invisibility: a bank barely twenty centimetres high and a metre wide, describing a rectangular space seven and a half metres long and three metres across. A gap of about a metre in the north long wall may be where a door once stood. What makes the place quietly arresting is not the structure itself but its setting. It sits on a terrace cut into the slope, deliberately levelled by whoever lived or worked there, and it lies inside a ringfort.

Ringforts, the most common archaeological monument type in Ireland, are enclosed farmsteads typically dating from the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, though some were used earlier or later. They usually consist of a circular earthen bank, sometimes with a ditch, enclosing a domestic space. Finding a house within one is not unusual in itself; the interiors of ringforts were where people lived. What is unusual here is the uncertainty that hangs over this particular structure. Its date is genuinely unknown. The earthen walls have weathered down to almost nothing, and the remains offer little to anchor them to any particular period. The house could belong to the original occupation of the ringfort, or it could be something later entirely, a structure inserted into a monument that was already old and perhaps already abandoned.
