Hut site, Ballyjennings, Co. Mayo

Tucked into the south-east corner of an ancient stone enclosure in County Mayo, a small rectangular structure has been quietly sitting in the landscape for centuries, its purpose long since forgotten but its outline still legible in stone.

What makes it quietly curious is the way it was built, not as a freestanding building, but as something stitched into the fabric of the larger enclosure around it, connected to the cashel wall by two low, linear stone walls that effectively made the perimeter do part of the work.

The enclosure it belongs to is a cashel, a type of early medieval stone ringfort in which a circular or oval drystone wall enclosed a domestic or agricultural settlement. This particular hut site sits in the south-east quadrant of that cashel at Ballyjennings, and it is one of at least three recorded hut sites associated with the complex. Measured at roughly 7.4 metres north to south and 6.2 metres east to west, it is a modest space, about the footprint of a generous modern living room. A survey of the Ballinrobe district carried out by Lavelle in 1994 placed it 18 metres south of another hut site within the same enclosure, suggesting a settlement of some internal organisation rather than a single isolated dwelling. The OPW Topographical Files had noted it a decade earlier, in 1983, simply as a small rectangular hut site just inside the wall on the south-east, a description that is plain but captures the essential fact: this was a domestic space, sheltered by and integrated with the larger stone boundary that defined the settlement around it.
