Hut site, Carrig, Co. Kerry

On a west-facing slope south of Moll's Gap in County Kerry, the bog has been slowly swallowing a small circular structure for what may be centuries.

Only a low ring of collapsed drystone walling still breaks the surface, protruding just thirty centimetres above the peat, its interior choked with rubble and rushes. At 3.2 metres in diameter, the hut was never large, the kind of modest shelter associated with seasonal farming or pastoral activity in the uplands, where people would move livestock to higher ground in summer and live in temporary accommodation while tending them.

The site sits within a wider landscape of relict field boundaries, the ghost of an organised agricultural system that once extended across this rough hill pasture. These fossilised enclosures, now largely absorbed into the bog, suggest the hut was not an isolated structure but part of a working environment, with fields or grazing divisions laid out around it. A second hut site of the same general character lies roughly three metres to the north-west, which implies at least a small cluster of occupation rather than a single opportunistic shelter. Drystone construction, in which stones are stacked without mortar, is a technique found across Irish upland sites from the prehistoric period through to early modern times, and without excavation it is difficult to assign the Carrig site to any particular era with confidence.

The setting near Moll's Gap, the mountain pass connecting Killarney to the Kenmare road, places the site in terrain that has long been marginal, windswept, and given over to rough grazing. The bog that now obscures the interior has likely preserved organic material beneath, though the visible remains are fragmentary. What survives above ground is enough to read the outline of a life lived at altitude, close to the edge of what the land could support.
