Hut site, Carrowkilleen, Co. Galway

Inside a cashel on the Galway landscape, tucked into the south-western quadrant of its enclosure, lies the faint outline of a circular house site roughly four and a half metres across.

A cashel is a dry-stone ringfort, typically dating from the early medieval period, and this one at Carrowkilleen contains within it the ghostly domestic remnants of whoever once lived inside its walls. The house itself survives only as a low, grassy bank, visible along an arc running from north-west to south-east, and most legible between west and north-east. The southern portion has vanished entirely into the ground, leaving an incomplete ring that requires a certain patience and a good eye to read.

What makes the arrangement quietly interesting is the layering of enclosure within enclosure. The cashel itself was a statement of territorial identity and protection; the house inside it was the intimate core of that world, a small circular dwelling of a type common across early medieval Ireland, where people slept, ate, and kept warm against Atlantic weather. A second, similar house site sits to the north-east within the same cashel, suggesting that at some point the enclosure sheltered more than one household, or at least more than one structure serving domestic purposes. That two such features survive, even partially, within a single cashel gives the site a slightly more complex character than a simple farmstead with a single occupant.
