Hut site, Killeen, Co. Clare

In the townland of Killeen in County Clare, a circular stone structure sits quietly at the centre of an ancient cashel, so thoroughly overtaken by trees that it has effectively become part of the woodland floor.

What remains is not a ruin in any dramatic sense, but a low, spread ring of collapsed walling, barely half a metre high, its stones subsiding into the ground across a width of roughly four metres. The outer extent of the whole structure stretches to about eleven and a half metres across, while the interior would once have enclosed a space just under four metres in diameter, enough for a small but functional dwelling.

The cashel it sits within is a separate enclosure altogether, a cashel being a roughly circular stone-walled fort of the early medieval period, typically associated with a single farmstead or small settlement. Having a hut at the centre of such an enclosure is consistent with how these sites were used, the inner structure serving as living quarters while the surrounding wall defined and protected the household's territory. The specific relationship between this hut and the cashel at Killeen has not been excavated or dated precisely, but the form places it comfortably within a broader tradition of early Irish rural settlement that persisted across several centuries. The trees that now grow over and through the collapsed walling have, in a practical sense, both obscured the site and helped preserve it, preventing disturbance while making the structural details harder to read from ground level.
