Sitting atop a north to south running ridge, with a steep eastern slope dropping away just 20 metres from the site, this small structure is so subtle it’s barely visible at ground level. The circular area measures about 6 metres north to south and 5 metres east to west, defined by what appears to be the remnants of an ancient stone bank or wall along its northern perimeter. Now covered in moss and rising only 20 centimetres high, these stones hint at a more substantial structure that once stood here.

The interior of this enigmatic site is deceptively simple; a flat, grassy surface that conceals stony ground beneath. Much of what you’re walking on is actually exposed limestone bedrock, part of a broad seam that extends along the ridge. The site’s date and original function remain uncertain, though its circular form and stone perimeter suggest it may have been a hut site, perhaps providing shelter for someone watching over livestock or keeping guard on this elevated position.

What makes this location particularly intriguing is its proximity to other archaeological features that dot this limestone ridge. Just 30 metres to the north lies a possible enclosure, with a hillfort only 50 metres away in the same direction. To the south, about 60 metres distant, there’s what may be an ancient cairn. This concentration of sites suggests the ridge held significance for past communities, though whether for defensive, agricultural, or ceremonial purposes remains an open question. The site was documented by Jane O’Shaughnessy and added to archaeological records in November 2015, ensuring this faint trace of the past won’t be forgotten.
