Near the northern tip of the Fanad Peninsula, about 1.5 kilometres east of Kindrum Bay, lies a fascinating archaeological site that offers a glimpse into ancient settlement patterns in County Donegal.
Hut site, Springfield, Co. Donegal
The location sits just southwest of a rocky ridge at the western end of Springfield Mountain, in an area characterised by undulating terrain covered with heather and rough grass. From here, the land slopes southward towards improved agricultural fields, creating a natural vantage point that would have been advantageous for early inhabitants.
The site contains two distinct hut structures positioned roughly 15 metres apart, each displaying different construction techniques that hint at varying periods or purposes of use. The northwestern structure is the more substantial of the two; a rectangular foundation measuring 5 metres north to south and 3.5 metres east to west internally. Its grass-covered walls, now standing about half a metre high, showcase sophisticated dry-wall construction with a rubble core flanked by carefully built inner and outer stone faces. What appears to be an entrance can be identified on the western side, suggesting the builders oriented their dwelling to shelter from prevailing Atlantic winds.
The southeastern structure presents a more enigmatic character, defined by upright stones emerging from low earthen banks that form a sub-rectangular enclosure approximately 4 metres across internally. The southern bank extends for 3.5 metres whilst a shorter section remains visible to the north. Two prominent stones at the western end of the southern bank, standing 0.85 and 0.55 metres high respectively and spaced just under a metre apart, likely mark the enclosure’s entrance. Additional set stones, none exceeding 0.3 metres in height, trace the perimeter of what may have been a dwelling of different design or function from its neighbour, perhaps representing a distinct cultural tradition or temporal period in this remote corner of Ireland.
