Kilns
A lime kiln sitting in the Cork countryside at Egmont is one of those structures that most people pass without a second glance, yet for centuries kilns like this one were as essential to the working landscape as a forge or a mill.
The process was straightforward but demanding: layers of limestone and fuel, usually coal or wood, were packed into a stone-lined bowl or draw kiln, then burned at intense heat over the course of several days. The resulting quicklime was spread across fields to reduce soil acidity, mixed into mortar for building work, or used in whitewash. Without access to lime, neither the land nor the architecture of rural Ireland would look quite as it does today.
