This intriguing site appears to have escaped the attention of early surveyors, as it’s notably absent from the 1840 Ordnance Survey map. By 1897, however, cartographers had taken notice, carefully annotating it on their detailed 25-inch maps. What they documented was a complex of raised earthworks: a large rectangular platform measuring roughly 80 by 60 metres, defined by scarps and ditches, with a smaller square platform tucked into its southern quadrant.

The site’s layout suggests it might be a medieval moated site, a type of fortified homestead once common across Ireland. These defended settlements typically consisted of raised platforms surrounded by water-filled ditches, providing both security and status to their inhabitants. At Lisheen, the main enclosure contains what appears to be a secondary platform, possibly the location of the original buildings, whilst immediately to the south lies another rectangular raised area, perhaps an associated bailey or service area. The southern portions of the monument have been disrupted by later drainage works connected to the landscaping of the Ballynanty estate, a common fate for many archaeological sites that found themselves within the bounds of post-medieval demesnes.

Modern aerial photography, including Google Earth imagery from 2019, reveals that despite centuries of agricultural use and estate improvements, Lisheen’s earthworks remain remarkably visible from above. The scarps and fosses that once defined this possible medieval settlement still mark the landscape, offering a tantalising glimpse of a time when such fortified homesteads dotted the Irish countryside. Whether it served as a manor house for a Norman settler, an Irish lord’s residence, or underwent transformation during the post-medieval period remains an open question, making Lisheen another of Ireland’s archaeological puzzles waiting to be fully understood.
