Megalithic structure, Ballyea, Co. Clare

In the townland of Ballyea in County Clare, a megalithic structure survives, old enough to predate written record and quiet enough to have escaped widespread attention.

Megalithic monuments, built from large stones and raised during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods roughly five thousand or more years ago, take many forms across Ireland, from portal tombs and wedge tombs to stone circles and standing stones. Which precise form this example takes is not currently documented in any publicly available source, which is itself a small curiosity. A monument substantial enough to be formally classified exists here, and yet its details remain, for the moment, out of reach.
