Megalithic structure, Funshin More, Co. Galway

In the saddle between Turlough Hill and Slievcarran, a stone structure nearly a hundred metres long curves across the uplands of south Galway, crosses a county boundary, and ends in a deliberate right-angle turn.

It is not a wall, not a field boundary, and not the ruin of anything obviously domestic. It is a long cairn, a type of elongated megalithic monument built from heaped stone and large slabs, and this one is unusual even by the standards of a monument class that tends toward the peculiar. Most long cairns run in a reasonably straight line; this one sinuates across the slope, roughly six metres wide and oriented along a northeast-facing incline with open views across south Galway and into northeast Clare.

The cairn sits mostly within the Funshin More townland on the Galway side, though it physically straddles the Galway and Clare border. At its eastern terminus the structure turns sharply northward, and a cluster of large boulders marks what appears to be a formally conceived end point, not a gradual trailing off but a considered full stop. Roughly two-thirds of the way along, closer to the eastern end, there are traces of what may be a megalithic chamber, a roughly five-by-two-metre arrangement of slabs set on edge within the body of the cairn, aligned with the long axis of the monument. No passage or entrance has been identified leading into this chamber-like space, which makes it difficult to categorise with confidence. Researchers Stefan Bergh and colleagues, writing in 2008 and again in 2016, documented the structure and noted its sinuous form as particularly distinctive. The western, uphill end has been damaged, with stones robbed out over time for use in the drystone walls that pattern the surrounding landscape.
