Known variously as the ‘Standing Stone’ on early Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and later as the ‘Giant’s Grave’ in 1848, this enigmatic structure consists of a low rectangular mound stretching five metres north to south, two metres east to west, and rising just half a metre above the surrounding landscape. What makes it particularly intriguing is the combination of an upright stone at its southern end, standing 1.6 metres tall, and a partially buried prostrate stone at the northern end.
Local folklore from the mid-19th century held that this was the burial place of ‘some noted person’, and Victorian observers claimed to have seen partly obliterated ornamental devices on the southern face of the standing stone, though these mysterious markings have long since vanished or become indiscernible. The monument was already in its current state when properly documented in 1848, suggesting it had been weathering the Donegal elements for considerably longer.
The true nature and original purpose of this megalithic structure remains tantalisingly uncertain. Archaeological surveys suggest the upright stone might have been a solitary standing stone, or perhaps one of an original pair, though it’s equally possible that a more substantial megalithic structure once stood here. Whether it served as a grave marker, a ceremonial site, or held some other significance to the ancient peoples who erected it, the monument continues to stand as a silent testament to Donegal’s deep prehistoric past.
