Megalithic tomb, An Caiseal, Co. Donegal
On a hillside at the northern tip of the Fanad peninsula in County Donegal, a mysterious stone structure lies hidden amongst the overgrowth.
Megalithic tomb, An Caiseal, Co. Donegal
Known locally as An Caiseal, this ancient monument was only rediscovered in 1994, having been concealed by bushes on the sloping ground just below an old roadway and a disused stone quarry. From this elevated position, the site offers sweeping views northward across the Atlantic, a location that would have held significance for whoever built this enigmatic structure centuries, or perhaps millennia, ago.
The monument appears to be the remains of a single chambered tomb, roughly polygonal in shape and measuring about 2.5 metres from north to south. Its construction shows sophisticated stonework; the chamber narrows at both ends and reaches its maximum width of 2 metres at the centre. The northern end consists of a single standing stone, whilst the eastern side retains one original upright stone set at an obtuse angle. The western wall presents a more complex arrangement, with three set stones and remnants of dry stone walling creating a concave outline. Several displaced slabs now lie within and around the chamber, including one large prostrate stone that may have once served as a corbel in the original roof structure.
Whilst archaeologists classify this as an unclassified megalithic tomb, its exact age and purpose remain tantalisingly uncertain. The careful construction, with its combination of large orthostats and smaller dry walling, suggests it served as a burial chamber for an ancient community who once inhabited this remote corner of Donegal. The site’s deteriorated condition makes it difficult to determine whether it dates from the Neolithic period like many Irish passage tombs, or from the later Bronze Age. What remains clear is that An Caiseal represents yet another piece in the complex puzzle of Ireland’s prehistoric landscape, waiting patiently amongst the windswept hills of Fanad for further investigation to reveal its secrets.
