In the townland of An Ghabhail, County Donegal, there once stood an enigmatic stone structure that captured the imagination of antiquarians and locals alike.

Known colloquially as ‘Dermot and Grania’s Bed’, after the legendary lovers from Irish mythology, this feature first appeared on the 1848 Ordnance Survey map but has since been demolished. The site occupied level ground with commanding views; Lough Salt Mountain rose to the north, whilst southeastward, the eye could follow the Lurgy River valley as it wound its way towards Kilmacrenan village.

When Thomas Fagan documented the structure between 1845 and 1848, he described what he believed to be the ruins of an ancient sepulchre. The centrepiece was an impressive oblong flagstone, measuring approximately 2.3 metres long, 1.7 metres broad, and 0.3 metres thick. This massive slab rested at an angle, with its eastern edge nearly touching the ground whilst the western side was elevated about 0.75 metres, supported by a pillar at each end. Just to the west, several upright stones of similar height stood clustered together, though Fagan noted that many other stones and enclosed graves had already been removed from the site by his time.

By 1903, further deterioration or interference had reduced the monument to what the Ordnance Survey described as merely ‘a large boulder laid horizontally over some loose stones’. Today, only two stones, each about a metre across and incorporated into a nearby field fence south of the original location, are claimed by locals to be remnants of this mysterious structure. Whilst Fagan and others speculated that these remains represented a ruined megalithic tomb, possibly a portal tomb given the description of the elevated capstone, the evidence was never conclusive enough to classify it definitively. The true nature and purpose of Dermot and Grania’s Bed remains one of the many archaeological puzzles scattered across the Irish landscape.
