Megalithic tomb – court tomb, Carrickafodan, Co. Donegal

About 1.7 kilometres east of Carndonagh, a partially ruined court tomb stands watch over the Donegal countryside, offering views across Trawbreaga Bay to the north.

The monument consists of a roofless stone gallery, at least 4.5 metres long, with the remains of a court at its north-northeast entrance. While the western side has largely collapsed, the eastern wall remains well preserved, with its stones incorporated into a massive wall that rises above the original tomb structure. The entire monument sits within a long mound approximately 34 metres in length, which appears to have originally formed a trapezoidal cairn that converged towards the south-southwest.

The court itself measures about 4.5 metres long and 5 metres wide at its outer end, formed by five standing stones on the eastern arm and three surviving stones on the western side. These stones decrease in height as they extend outward from the gallery entrance, creating a funnel-like approach to the tomb. Inside, the gallery is divided into at least two chambers by carefully placed jamb and septal stones, with the front chamber measuring 2.5 metres long and the rear chamber 1.8 metres long by 1.4 metres wide. The eastern side of the front chamber features three steeply inclined corbels, suggesting the original roofing technique, whilst a crossing stone at the southern end might indicate either the gallery’s terminus or perhaps a third chamber beyond.

The site has yielded some intriguing discoveries over the years. In 1848, when the landowner removed the capstone to build a limekiln, he reportedly found a small metal cup about 23 centimetres in diameter containing only earth. More recently, around 1974, excavations uncovered a plano-convex flint knife and part of a Bann flake, both now housed in the National Museum of Ireland. These artefacts, along with the tomb’s sophisticated construction, speak to the considerable skill and organisation of the Neolithic communities who built these monuments across Ireland’s northern landscapes.
