The monument represents one of Ireland’s earliest forms of megalithic architecture, dating back to the Neolithic period when farming communities first began constructing elaborate stone tombs for their dead.

The tomb’s layout follows the classic court tomb design, though time and weather have taken their toll on the structure. What remains is a partially destroyed forecourt on the northeast side that would have served as a ceremonial space, leading into a gallery divided into distinct chambers. Three standing stones survive on the north side of the court, with a solitary stone marking the south side. The gallery itself consists of a narrow antechamber, roughly one metre wide and 1.2 metres long, which opens into the main burial chamber through a pair of stone jambs.

The main chamber stretches three metres in length and varies between 1.5 and 1.75 metres in width, with roofing corbels still visible on the north side; these would have originally supported stone slabs that formed the tomb’s ceiling. At the rear of this chamber, another pair of jambs hints at what was once a second chamber, now lost to time. This multi-chambered design is typical of court tombs, which were likely used for successive burials over many generations, serving as both burial places and focal points for ritual activities in these early farming communities.
