Megalithic tomb – court tomb, Pollnagawna, Co. Mayo

On the landscape of County Mayo, a Neolithic court tomb at Pollnagawna has quietly outlasted the civilisation that built it by several thousand years.

Court tombs, among the earliest monumental structures raised in Ireland, are distinguished by a forecourt area, typically a roofless semicircular or oval space formed by upright stones, which opened onto one or more roofed gallery chambers used for burial. They date broadly to the fourth millennium BC, and Mayo has one of the densest concentrations of them anywhere in the country, scattered across bogland and hillside with an almost casual frequency that still surprises.

The principal scholarly record for this tomb comes from the fieldwork of Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin, whose Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, Volume II, covering County Mayo, was published by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 1964. That survey remains a foundational document for the study of Irish megalithic architecture, systematically cataloguing the structural details, orientations, and conditions of tombs across the county at a time when many sites had already suffered centuries of agricultural disturbance, stone robbing, and encroaching peat. De Valera and Ó Nualláin's meticulous approach to recording dimensions, surviving orthostat counts, and cairn material has given subsequent researchers a baseline against which later changes can be measured.
