Megalithic tomb, Murroe, Co. Donegal
In the boggy pastures of County Donegal, about 1.6 kilometres east of a court tomb and within sight of Muckish Mountain's imposing peaks, stands a mysterious megalithic monument that has puzzled archaeologists for decades.

The site, located in Errarooey Beg townland and just 1.5 kilometres from the sandy beaches near Dooros Point, consists of five standing stones, or orthostats, arranged in what appears to be a deliberate pattern. Though now poorly preserved and partially hidden by overgrowth, the monument offers tantalising clues about its ancient purpose, with two opposing stones at the western end displaying the characteristic flat inner and sloping outer faces typical of court tomb chambers.
The current state of the monument tells only part of its story. Five orthostats remain upright, ranging from 0.45 to 1.2 metres in height, with several displaced stones scattered around the site; some resting against the standing stones, others lying amongst the grass-grown mound that surrounds the structure. When antiquarian Fagan visited in the mid-19th century, he documented what he described as a ‘grave’ measuring approximately 2.15 metres long and 1.2 metres wide, enclosed by slabs that inclined inward and nearly met at the top. He also noted that many similar structures had already been destroyed by that time, suggesting this site was once part of a larger complex.
Adding to the site’s intrigue is a curved line of stones protruding from the bog about 10 metres to the north and west, which archaeologists believe represents an ancient boundary fence. While the monument cannot be definitively classified due to its deteriorated condition, the similarity of its western orthostats to the corbel-bearing stones found in court tombs suggests it may have housed an east-west aligned burial chamber. The site remains an enigmatic reminder of Ireland’s Neolithic past, its true purpose obscured by time and the encroaching bog that has slowly reclaimed the landscape around it.
