In a quiet valley opening onto Malin Bay on the Donegal coast, a remarkable series of megalithic chambers stretches across two fields for about 100 metres.

This ancient complex, known locally as the Glencolumbkille portal tombs, consists of six stone chambers built at irregular intervals, with four of them clearly identifiable as portal tombs; distinctive Neolithic monuments where massive stone slabs form a doorway leading to a burial chamber. The site sits on reclaimed pastureland with commanding views out to sea to the west and north, though the lower slopes of Leahan Mountain restrict the outlook to the south and southeast.

Chamber No. 4, positioned roughly in the middle of this stone procession, presents something of an archaeological puzzle. Unlike its neighbours, its original design remains uncertain. What survives today is a modest structure about 1.5 metres across, consisting of five standing stones and a displaced roofstone that has slipped from its original position. The chamber appears to open eastward, with a single orthostat forming the western end and converging side walls made up of three more stones. A sixth stone stands mysteriously just beyond the open end; it might be part of an entrance feature or evidence that the structure was once more extensive. The roofstone, measuring 1.9 by 1.5 metres, once covered the chamber space but now rests at an angle with one end on the ground.

The site has a complex history of documentation and intervention. When antiquarian Thomas Fagan visited in 1847, he claimed all the chambers once stood within a single long cairn measuring roughly 91 metres east to west, though by his time it was already damaged by farming activities. The Board of Works carried out restoration work here in the late 1880s, during which they puzzlingly reported two chambers at this location, each measuring about 1.2 metres square and filled with rubbish. However, no other historical account supports this claim of dual chambers, and their proposed examination of the debris around the structures left no known record of findings. Today, a grass covered mound of uncertain age sits to the south of Chamber No. 4, alongside old cultivation ridges, whilst scattered stones throughout the eastern half of the site hint at the ancient cairn Fagan described, though excavation would be needed to confirm their origins.
