Metalworking site, Danesfort, Co. Kilkenny

Beneath what is now the N9/N10 road corridor in County Kilkenny, a small industrial operation once ran hot enough to leave its mark in the soil for centuries.

The site at Danesfort is not the kind of place that announces itself: no standing stones, no ruined walls, just a north-facing slope in ordinary agricultural land. What made it remarkable was what lay underground, and what road construction in 2007 would have quietly erased had archaeologists not got there first.

Excavations carried out that year, ahead of the Kilcullen to Waterford road improvement scheme, uncovered a bowl furnace, a type of simple smelting or smithing installation consisting of a deep, roughly circular pit in which metal was worked at high temperature. The furnace at Danesfort had accumulated slag, the glassy waste produced during metalworking, concentrated around the rim of the pit, suggesting it was used repeatedly over time, filling a little further with each firing. Several other pits scattered across the excavated area also yielded slag and related debris, pointing to sustained activity rather than a single episode. Close by, roughly twenty metres to the south-east, a cereal-drying kiln was also uncovered. The pairing is quietly suggestive: metalworking and grain processing side by side on the same gentle slope, two of the more labour-intensive tasks of early rural life sharing the same small patch of ground.
