Moated site, Ballinderry, Co. Meath

Situated on a gentle west-facing slope about 40 metres from the Blackwater River, the moated site at Ballinderry presents a fascinating example of medieval earthworks in County Meath.

The main feature is a rectangular platform, now covered in grass and reeds, measuring between 28 and 39 metres from northwest to southeast, and 15 to 19 metres across. This platform sits within silted moats that would have once held water, creating a defensive island. The moats themselves are substantial, ranging from 11 to 17 metres wide at the top and reaching depths of up to 2.2 metres internally, with the northwestern section plunging to an impressive 3 metres. Earthen banks surround these moats, adding another layer of defence to the site.

Beyond the moated platform, the earthworks extend into a larger complex that hints at the site’s former importance. The outer banks continue past the main moated area to enclose a second rectangular plot, approximately 54 metres by 50 metres, defined by lower earthen banks. An east-west bank cuts through this enclosure, possibly marking different functional areas within the space. At the southern corner, archaeologists have identified what appears to be either a silted quarry or a small fishpond, measuring about 25 metres by 7 metres. Such features were common in medieval sites, with quarries providing building materials and fishponds offering a reliable food source.

The full extent of the earthworks may be even larger than initially apparent. Additional outer banks can be traced at several points around the site, and the current field boundary to the northeast might incorporate an earlier defensive bank, suggesting the original complex could have stretched up to 150 metres in length. Modern alterations include a spoil mound from river drainage works that runs parallel to the Blackwater, positioned between the river and the medieval earthwork banks. Despite these later additions, the site remains a remarkably well-preserved example of medieval land management and defensive architecture in the Irish midlands.
