The rectangular enclosure measures approximately 51 metres from northwest to southeast and 48 metres from northeast to southwest, with its interior space spanning roughly 43 by 37 metres. A slight internal bank runs along the perimeter, accompanied by a waterlogged fosse or moat that’s about 2.5 to 3 metres wide and between 1 to 1.5 metres deep on most sides. The southern edge tells a different story; here the defensive ditch runs dry and considerably shallower at only half a metre deep.

The site’s overgrown state, thick with trees and scrub, adds to its mysterious character whilst making detailed examination challenging. Small boulders scattered across the northwest sector hint at the presence of internal structures, possibly the foundations of buildings that once stood within this protected space. These stone remnants suggest this wasn’t merely a defensive enclosure but likely contained domestic or agricultural buildings.

Moated sites like this one were typically constructed during the Anglo-Norman period in Ireland, serving as fortified farmsteads for colonial settlers or prosperous farming families. The waterlogged moat would have provided both defence and drainage, whilst the raised platform created by excavating the surrounding ditch kept buildings dry. Today, this forgotten corner of Kilkenny offers a tangible connection to medieval Ireland’s complex history of settlement and fortification.
