Moated site, Cushenstown, Co. Wexford

On a gentle west-facing slope in Cushenstown, County Wexford, lies the remains of a medieval moated site that offers a glimpse into Ireland's defensive agricultural past.

The site occupies a raised rectangular platform measuring approximately 40 metres from northeast to southwest and 33 metres from northwest to southeast, though today it’s largely concealed beneath dense scrub vegetation. A small stream flows north to south roughly 320 metres to the west, which would have provided a reliable water source for the site’s original inhabitants.

The most striking features are the earthen banks and external moats that define the site’s perimeter, creating a formidable defensive barrier that has survived centuries of weathering. The northeastern bank, which serves as a good example of the site’s construction, stands at an impressive 2.3 metres high when viewed from the outside, whilst measuring 0.9 metres from the interior; the bank itself spans about 3 metres in width. Running alongside these banks, the external moats would have presented an additional obstacle to any unwanted visitors. At the northeast section, the moat measures 3 metres across at its top, narrowing to 1.5 metres at the base, with a depth of approximately 1 metre from the external ground level.

This type of moated site was typically constructed during the Anglo-Norman period, serving as fortified farmsteads for colonising settlers who needed protection whilst establishing agricultural operations in newly conquered territories. The combination of raised platform, defensive banks, and water-filled moats created a secure compound where families could live, store crops, and shelter livestock. First documented by Barry in 1977 and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford in 1996, the site continues to be monitored and studied by archaeologists seeking to understand medieval settlement patterns in southeast Ireland.
