In the marshy pastures east of a public road near Kells, County Limerick, lies a curious medieval earthwork that tells a story of defensive ingenuity.

Moated site, Kells, Co. Limerick

This moated site consists of a sub-rectangular area protected by a double bank system; an inner and outer earthen rampart with a water-filled ditch, or fosse, running between them. The fosse spans about 4.2 metres in width and, though now only 30 centimetres deep and rather waterlogged, would have once formed a more formidable barrier. A stream still feeds into it from the western side, keeping the ancient defensive feature perpetually wet, though these days it’s more likely to contain domestic rubbish than medieval artefacts.

The earthworks themselves remain remarkably well-preserved despite centuries of weathering and agricultural use. The inner bank rises to 1.6 metres on its external side, though dense vegetation and briar growth have made it largely inaccessible except for a cattle break on the west-southwest side where livestock have worn a 1.2-metre gap through the defences. The outer bank stands even taller at 1.8 metres on its interior face and 1.55 metres externally, with its best-preserved sections running from southwest to west-southwest. Moving northeastward to east-southeast, this outer rampart becomes lower and more spread out, gradually merging with the surrounding landscape.

What makes this site particularly intriguing is the slight depression that runs along the outer edge of the external bank from north-northeast to east-southeast; a 20-centimetre deep channel that may have served as an additional drainage feature or marked the original construction boundary. The level interior, now rough pasture, would have once contained buildings, perhaps a fortified farmhouse or small manor belonging to a local Anglo-Norman family. Today, the site has been partially incorporated into a field boundary running east-southeast to southwest, a testament to how medieval fortifications often find second lives in Ireland’s agricultural landscape.
