On the flat, poorly drained grasslands of the River Suir's floodplains in Monalumpera, County Tipperary South, lies a remarkably well-preserved medieval moated site.

This rectangular fortification measures 77 metres from northeast to southwest and 56 metres from northwest to southeast, enclosed by a substantial earth and stone bank that rises up to 1.5 metres high. The bank, which has a flat top measuring 3 metres across and a base of 8 metres, is surrounded by a water-filled defensive ditch, or fosse, that’s still waterlogged today. The fosse itself is quite impressive; with a flat bottom 4 metres wide expanding to 8 metres at the top, it would have presented a formidable obstacle to any would-be attackers.

The site’s defensive features are best preserved along the southeastern and southwestern sides, where both the bank and outer fosse remain largely intact. A deliberate gap in the southwestern section, measuring 8 metres wide, marks the original entrance to the enclosure, whilst a more recent break in the northeastern side near the eastern corner represents modern damage. The outer fosse has been filled in places, particularly along the northern and eastern sections, but where it survives from east through south to west, it gives a clear impression of the site’s original defensive capabilities.

The location appears to have been strategically chosen, sitting just 60 metres from the River Suir to the west and near an ancient fording point called Aughnakilleen to the north. The broader landscape tells a story of medieval settlement and defence, with a ringwork and bailey 335 metres to the southeast and a ringfort 360 metres to the east, suggesting this area was of considerable importance during the medieval period. Though no internal features are visible today within the moated enclosure, the site remains an evocative reminder of Ireland’s turbulent medieval past when such fortifications were essential for protecting both people and property.
