When cartographers revisited the site for the 1906-7 revision, they marked the southern, western and northern sides with hachures, indicating the presence of earthworks. The enclosure measures approximately 50 metres from north to south at its widest point.

Today, visitors can still make out the faint outline of what would have been a defensive bank and fosse, though centuries of weathering have softened these medieval earthworks. Moated sites like this one were typically built between the 13th and 14th centuries, often serving as fortified farmsteads for Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous Irish families. The square or rectangular platform, surrounded by a water-filled ditch, would have supported a timber hall and various outbuildings.

This particular site was documented in the Archaeological Inventory of County Laois, published by Dublin Stationery Office in 1995. The survey, compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran, catalogued hundreds of archaeological monuments across the county, helping to preserve knowledge of Ireland’s medieval landscape for future generations.
