This earthwork monument consists of a slightly raised rectangular platform, measuring approximately 32 metres north to south and 38 metres east to west, surrounded by the weathered remains of an earth and stone bank and an outer defensive ditch, or fosse. The site enjoys commanding views across the surrounding countryside, with another enclosure visible 375 metres to the northwest and the historic Killough Castle standing 650 metres to the west.
The defensive bank, originally between two and three metres wide at its base, varies considerably in its state of preservation around the circuit. From the west through north to northeast, the earthwork remains relatively intact, standing about half a metre high on the interior and slightly higher when viewed from outside. However, the southern and northwestern sections have been reduced to little more than a scarp. The outer fosse, which would have provided additional defence when filled with water, survives best along the northern and northeastern sides where it measures over three metres wide at the top and reaches depths of nearly a metre. Elsewhere, centuries of neglect and agricultural activity have seen it largely filled in.
Time and human activity have left their marks on this medieval fortification. A small quarry, roughly five metres long and half a metre deep, cuts into the northern bank’s external face near its eastern end, whilst field clearance stones have been piled along the outer edge of the eastern bank; testament to the site’s later use as convenient dumping ground for agricultural debris. Despite the heavy vegetation that now obscures much of its original form, the monument remains a tangible link to Ireland’s medieval past, when such moated sites served as fortified homesteads for Anglo-Norman settlers and prosperous Irish families alike.
