This intriguing archaeological feature was first documented on the 1839 Ordnance Survey map, which clearly marked it as an oval or subrectangular enclosure surrounded by embankments. The site measures approximately 50 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south, occupying a gentle slope that faces eastward towards the Irish Sea.

Today, visitors to the location would find little evidence of this historic structure visible above ground; centuries of agricultural use have smoothed over the earthworks that once defined the enclosure. The identification of this site as a possible moated settlement is significant, as these defensive homesteads were typically constructed by Anglo-Norman colonists and wealthy Irish families during the 13th and 14th centuries. Moated sites consisted of a raised platform surrounded by a water-filled ditch, providing both defence and a display of status for their inhabitants.

The site’s proximity to the coast would have offered strategic advantages for its medieval occupants, including access to maritime trade routes and coastal resources. Archaeological surveys conducted for the County Wexford inventory have helped preserve knowledge of this site, even as its physical traces continue to fade into the landscape. While it may appear unremarkable to the casual observer, this hidden enclosure represents an important piece of Wexford’s medieval heritage, offering glimpses into the lives of those who shaped the county’s cultural landscape centuries ago.
