In the countryside near Tullyleak, County Limerick, a curious rectangular feature lies hidden in partially reclaimed pasture, about 155 metres south of a stream marking the boundary with Fantstown.

This subtle earthwork, identified by archaeologist Christina O’Regan in 2010, reveals itself most clearly from above; on aerial photographs taken between 2011 and 2013, you can make out a roughly rectangular area measuring approximately 38 metres north to south and 34 metres east to west, defined by a waterlogged ditch or fosse that runs along its northern, eastern, and southern edges. A farm track cuts through its western side, disrupting the original outline.

The site’s form and shape initially suggest it might be a medieval moated site, those defensive earthworks that once protected farmsteads and manor houses across Ireland during the 13th and 14th centuries. However, the evidence points to a more prosaic explanation. Rather than being a remnant of medieval settlement, this feature is most likely a moated field, created not for defence but for agricultural drainage. Such features were common improvements to boggy or waterlogged land, helping farmers reclaim difficult terrain for cultivation or grazing.

What makes this site particularly interesting is its relative invisibility in the historical record; it doesn’t appear on the Ordnance Survey’s historic 6-inch maps, those remarkably detailed Victorian surveys that documented virtually every field boundary, building, and landmark across Ireland. Just 55 metres to the north lies another earthwork, a ditch-barrow that forms part of the wider archaeological landscape of this quiet corner of Limerick, reminding us that even seemingly ordinary fields can hold traces of centuries of human activity and agricultural innovation.
