On the flat flood plains of the Yellow River, about 300 metres south of its current course, lies a substantial medieval earthwork complex that offers a glimpse into Ireland's defensive past.

The main feature is a large, lozenge-shaped enclosure measuring roughly 110 metres from east to west and 93 metres from north to south. This raised platform is defined by a broad, shallow fosse (a defensive ditch) averaging 5 metres wide and half a metre deep, accompanied by an external bank that rises between 1 and 2 metres above the ditch. The interior bank is less prominent, appearing only along the northern, southern, and eastern corners, with the northern section forming a distinctive low mound.

The site’s defensive characteristics suggest it may have been a medieval moated site, though its exact purpose remains somewhat mysterious. The interior is notably flat with no visible evidence of internal structures, which is unusual for such sites. The fosse widens to nearly 8 metres on the south-eastern side, though this appears to be due to later disturbance rather than original design. Aerial photography from the Geological Survey of Ireland has helped reveal the full extent of the earthworks, showing clear evidence of a gap and causeway at the south-eastern entrance.

South of the main enclosure, a series of additional earthworks adds complexity to the site. The most distinct of these is a rectangular enclosure measuring 10 by 25 metres, surrounded by a low bank about 30 centimetres high and oriented northeast to southwest. While some of the surrounding earthworks appear to be more recent, possibly resulting from clay extraction activities, the main features represent a well-preserved example of medieval defensive architecture. Situated on a slight rise in otherwise low-lying terrain near Ballyburley Hill, the entire complex demonstrates the strategic thinking of its builders, who chose this location to maximise both defensive advantages and control over the surrounding landscape.
