Mound, Clonconwal, Co. Donegal

In the grasslands of Clonconwal, County Donegal, stands a curious earthen mound known locally as 'Parkananchory'.

This nearly square structure, measuring 19 metres on each side and rising about a metre above the surrounding field, has long captured the imagination of locals who believe it marks the final resting place of an ancient cleric. The name itself hints at ecclesiastical connections; 'páirc' meaning field in Irish, possibly combined with references to an anchorite or religious hermit who may have once lived and died in this remote corner of Ireland.

The mound's regular, geometric shape sets it apart from natural formations and suggests deliberate construction, though without excavation its true purpose remains speculative. Such earthen monuments are scattered throughout Ireland's landscape, serving various functions from burial sites to ceremonial platforms, and dating from prehistoric times through to the medieval period. The association with a cleric's burial, whilst unverified archaeologically, reflects a common pattern in Irish folklore where ancient monuments become linked with Christian figures, particularly as the early Church often appropriated or sanctified older pagan sites.

Today, Parkananchory sits quietly in its field of good grassland, recorded and protected as part of Donegal's archaeological heritage. Its modest height and weathered form belie its potential significance as a window into the county's distant past, whether as a genuine ecclesiastical burial, a pre-Christian monument later given Christian associations, or something else entirely. Like many of Ireland's field monuments, it serves as a tangible reminder that the seemingly empty countryside is actually dense with history, much of it predating written records and surviving only in the landscape itself and the stories passed down through generations.
