Mound, Srath Na Circe, Co. Donegal
In the marshy pastures of County Donegal's Glen river valley stands an ancient earthen mound known to locals as 'Cearc's Grave'.
Mound, Srath Na Circe, Co. Donegal
This substantial prehistoric monument measures 44 metres from south-southwest to north-northeast and 30 metres from west-northwest to east-southeast at its base, tapering to 22 metres by 19 metres at its summit. Rising nearly 5 metres above the surrounding landscape, the mound’s irregular shape and impressive dimensions suggest it once held significant importance for the area’s early inhabitants.
The summit features a notable hollow that reportedly once contained two stone slabs, though these have long since vanished. Whether these stones marked a burial, served a ceremonial purpose, or had some other function remains a mystery. The mound’s local name, referencing a grave, hints at folk memories of its possible use as a burial site, though without excavation, its true purpose and age remain speculative.
Situated in what is now marshy pastureland, the mound would have been a prominent feature in the landscape for millennia. Its position on the valley floor, rather than on higher ground, is somewhat unusual for such monuments and may indicate specific reasons for its placement, perhaps related to ancient territorial boundaries, ritual significance, or practical considerations lost to time. The site forms part of Donegal’s rich archaeological heritage, documented in the county’s comprehensive archaeological survey compiled in 1983.
