Somewhere beneath the tarmac and footfall of a Dublin city street lies the ghost of a medieval harbour structure, detectable now only through archaeology.
Excavations at the northern end of the street revealed the remains of a possible jetty, a timber or stone platform projecting into the water to allow vessels to load and unload cargo, that once edged the medieval city's waterfront. It is the kind of find that reframes an ordinary urban streetscape entirely, turning a familiar route into something considerably older and stranger.
The jetty appears to have been constructed during the 13th century, a period when Dublin was expanding rapidly as a commercial port under Anglo-Norman administration. The city's relationship with the Liffey and its tidal channels was practical and immediate during this era; wharves, slipways, and landing places were essential infrastructure rather than civic amenities. By the early 14th century, however, this particular structure had fallen out of use. The reasons are not recorded in the excavation findings cited by Walsh (1997), but shifting watercourses, silting, and changes in trade patterns were all common factors in the abandonment of medieval waterfront features across European port towns. The site preserves, in fragmentary form, evidence of a Dublin that was still working out its relationship with the water at its edge.
There is no marker, no interpretive panel, and nothing visible at street level to indicate what lies below. The evidence exists in the archaeological record rather than in any physical feature a visitor could observe. For those interested in the medieval city's topography, the broader area repays attention on foot, where the gentle gradient toward the old waterfront and the layout of streets can still suggest, very faintly, the logic of a riverside settlement.
