This coastal fortification, like many others scattered along Ireland’s Atlantic shores, was strategically positioned to take advantage of natural cliff defences whilst providing commanding views of the surrounding seascape. The site represents a type of monument particularly common in coastal areas, where communities once used the dramatic topography to their defensive advantage.
