Promontory fort – coastal, Gleann Lach, Co. Donegal

On the rugged coastline of County Donegal, the promontory fort at Gleann Lach stands as a testament to Ireland's ancient defensive architecture.

These coastal fortifications, built on naturally defensible headlands jutting into the sea, were once common along Ireland's Atlantic shores. The fort at Gleann Lach would have been strategically positioned to take advantage of the steep cliffs on three sides, requiring defenders to fortify only the landward approach with earthworks, ditches, or stone ramparts.
