A cast-iron hand pump, surviving from the nineteenth century in the townland of Derrymullan in County Galway, is the kind of object that tends to get overlooked precisely because it was once so ordinary.
Before piped water reached rural Irish communities, pumps like this were the functional centre of daily life, gathering points as much as water sources, and their gradual disappearance from the landscape has been quiet enough that the ones still standing rarely attract much attention.
