Quarry, Alleendarra, Co. Galway

A disused gravel pit in Alleendarra, County Galway, is not the most glamorous entry in the catalogue of Irish places worth knowing about, but its very plainness carries a kind of quiet historical weight.

Gravel pits of this type were working features of the rural landscape for generations, supplying the aggregate used in road-making, drainage, and general construction across the townlands and parishes around them. When they fell out of use, they were often simply left, becoming small depressions in the ground that local people walked past without much thought.
