Quarry, Caherglassaun, Co. Galway

On the limestone plain near Caherglassaun in County Galway, a quarry once existed that has since vanished so completely that no trace of it remains above ground.

What makes this quietly curious is not the quarry itself, a modest sand or gravel extraction that would have served a local and entirely practical purpose, but the fact that we know it existed at all only because a cartographer thought to mark it down.

The evidence comes from the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the extraordinary mid-nineteenth-century mapping project that documented Ireland in remarkable detail, recording field boundaries, buildings, placenames, and small industrial features that might otherwise have left no trace in the historical record. This quarry was one such feature. Its working life fell after 1700, which places it in the era of improving landlords, local road-building, and the steady demand for aggregate that came with agricultural and infrastructural change across rural Connacht. Beyond that, the record is silent. No dimensions, no operator, no indication of when it fell out of use or when the land reclaimed whatever hollow or cutting had been made.
