On the 1920 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a hachured mark sits quietly in what is now rough scrub and pastureland near Feagh in County Galway.
Hachuring, a system of short lines used by cartographers to indicate changes in terrain, suggested something worth noting, a depression or hollow significant enough to record. When the site was inspected in 1983, it turned out to be a sand pit, almost certainly dug sometime after 1700 for purely practical purposes, the kind of small-scale extraction that once supported local building and land improvement across rural Ireland. It is, by any measure, an ordinary thing, and that ordinariness is precisely what makes it worth a moment's attention.
