A disused gravel pit on the edge of Gorteenayanka in County Galway is not the kind of place that usually attracts much attention, and in a way that is precisely what makes it worth a moment's thought.
Scattered across the Irish countryside, old extraction sites like this one mark the quiet industrial logic of rural life, where local materials were dug out to surface roads, fill foundations, or provide drainage aggregate for the surrounding farmland. Most were worked informally, serving a townland or a parish rather than any larger commercial operation, and most have since been left to grass over or flood.
