Quarry, Gortnakilla, Co. Galway

In the townland of Gortnakilla in County Galway, a disused gravel pit sits quietly in the landscape, its working life long finished.

Gravel pits of this kind were once a practical necessity across rural Ireland, providing the loose aggregate used to surface roads, fill drains, and support the foundations of local building work. When the material ran out, or the need passed, they were simply left, becoming slowly absorbed back into the surrounding fields and scrub.
