The 1944 to 1945 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map records the feature using hachures, the fine radiating lines surveyors used to indicate a depression or earthwork of some kind, suggesting something that might, at a glance, be read as an ancient enclosure or earthen monument. It was not until 1984 that a physical inspection confirmed the feature for what it actually is: a small, disused quarry.

The distinction matters more than it might seem. Because the quarry dates to after AD 1700, it falls outside the scope of archaeological classification, which generally concerns itself with earlier remains. This means a mark on a mid-twentieth-century map, ambiguous enough to prompt curiosity, turned out to represent something comparatively recent in Irish terms, a working cut into a hillside where stone was once extracted, now grass-grown and quiet. Small quarries like this were once common across rural Ireland, dug to supply local building material for field walls, farmsteads, and roads, and many have since blended back into the landscape so thoroughly that only the slight irregularity of the ground betrays them.
