Quarry, Knockdrummore, Co. Galway

At Knockdrummore in County Galway, a disused gravel pit sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of industrial remnant that accumulates a particular stillness once the work has stopped and the machinery has gone.

Gravel extraction of this sort was once commonplace across rural Ireland, supplying material for road-building and local construction, and the pits left behind tend to sink gradually back into their surroundings, colonised by scrub and water, their original purpose increasingly difficult to read from the ground.
