Quarry, Reaskmore, Co. Galway

On the northern face of a small hummock in the grasslands of Reaskmore, there is a hollow that was once thought, from a distance and from the evidence of an old map, to be something more ancient than it is.

A hachured feature, the cartographic shorthand used on Ordnance Survey maps to indicate a slope or earthwork, appeared on the 1944 to 1945 revision of the six-inch OS map and suggested the presence of some kind of earthen monument. When the site was inspected in 1984, the feature turned out to be a disused quarry, long abandoned and well on its way to being reclaimed by grass and scrub.

The quarry dates to after 1700, which places it firmly in the era of agricultural improvement and estate building that reshaped much of the Irish countryside in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Small quarries of this kind were a practical feature of rural life, opened to extract stone for field walls, farmsteads, or roads, and closed just as informally once the immediate need had passed. What is quietly interesting about this one is the gap between its cartographic life and its physical reality: for several decades, the mark on the map carried an ambiguity that the landscape itself had already resolved. It took a direct inspection to settle the question, collapsing whatever brief archaeological promise the hachures had seemed to offer.
